The Vatican City, officially known as the Holy See, is the smallest independent country in the world, both in terms of area and population. Located in the heart of Rome, Italy, the Vatican is the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church. It serves as the residence of the Pope and the headquarters for the global Catholic community. One of the Vatican’s most famous landmarks is St. Peter’s Basilica, an architectural masterpiece that was constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries. The basilica is considered one of the holiest sites in Christianity, built atop what is believed to be the burial site of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Its stunning dome, designed by Michelangelo, dominates the skyline of the Vatican. Another highlight is the Vatican Museums, which house an extensive collection of art and historical treasures, including the magnificent Sistine Chapel, whose ceiling was famously painted by Michelangelo. The chapel is known for its breathtaking frescoes, especially the "Creation of Adam," one of the most iconic images in Western art. The Vatican is also home to beautiful gardens and various administrative buildings that manage the Church’s global operations.
